Southern Wind delivers their custom high performance race cruiser, the SW-RP90 for a reverting client settings sails for an epic 7.000 nautical miles maiden voyage from South Africa to the Mediterranean Sea.
The demand by the owner was clear to build “a very fast yacht with the comfort and safety standards typical of a cruising yacht but versatile enough for both fast cruises with family and excellent performance in the most renowned offshore and inshore superyacht regattas“. The result –impressive.
Southern Wind SW-RP90 is a new generation project, characterized by a strong focus on performance, flexible sailing setups, radical design and advanced construction and systems technology. The set up for SW-RP90 ALL SMOKE luxury performance yacht are a single rudder with lifting keel and a variable draft of 3.80m-5.80m and 469 square meters sail plan to move this 46.5 tons lightship IRC racer cruiser. The focus was on weight saving without compromising on comfort or safety which has been achieved thanks to use of sophisticated materials like Prepreg and Nomex for the deck and structures, as well as the hull has been infused on a single female mould with carbon fibre and epoxy resin.
Commenting on the sea trials which took place after the launch of SW-RP90 ALL SMOKE luxury performance sailing yacht, Marco Alberti, General Manager and Technical Director of Southern Wind said: “We used cruising sails during the sea trials and still effortlessly recorded speed in excess of 18 knots. The owner and captain were really pleased with the performance, as we were, too”
Reichel Pugh Yacht Design responsible for naval architecture and arrangement of interior and exterior commented: “Our goal was to create the fastest yacht that could still meet the client’s cruising requirements; to this end particular care was taken throughout the project to avoid unnecessary weight. In the hull design we developed a shape where the heeled form provides power while reaching and sailing upwind, but with a narrow upright waterline that still allows for good light air performance.“
Nauta Design creating the interior added: “Our challenge was to design interiors that were intriguing and innovative but with ergonomics that could function within the structural and dimensional constraints that the performance aspects of the yacht’s design imposed. These constraints led us to show, and not hide, the yacht’s shapes and its main structural elements, but “show, don’t hide” also became the leitmotif of the interior design“
New Southern Wind SW-RP90 is set to be a luxury performance racer of finest caliber. An ultimate 90 footer suitable for long range family cruising as well as racing the most renowned and popular regattas.
Southern Wind has currently 4 exciting sailing yachts in build at their Cape Town shipyard of which two are scheduled for delivery this year, hull number one of SW96 and SW105 whereby the hull numbers two are scheduled for launch in 2018.
